Hangover, but don’t hang over

Hangover is an unpleasant state which has both mental and physical symptoms and is usually caused by excessive consumption of alcohol. These symptoms are often included headache, sick stomach, nausea, fatigue, dry mouth, and a general unwell feeling.

When consuming alcohol, without decent limits, there is always a risk of dehydration due to its diuretic effect on the body. So, therefore it’s important to drink appropriate amount of water, even during a fun night out with friends while getting a few fuzzy cocktails.

Alcohol metabolized in the liver by an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase. This process takes time, and the effect of the alcohol exists in the body, until it’s fully empties out. So basically, when someone drinks too much or too fast, it’s heavier for the liver to metabolize the alcohol, and this process causing the symptoms of hangover. 

There are quite a few methods and urban legends to relieve the symptoms of hangover. Resting and sleeping is certainly a useful treatment since the alcohol can affect the sleep quality badly. A healthy diet also be able to help to tilt the next day in a positive direction. After a long night, accompanied by many drinks, it is suggested to consume foods that are easy to digest. On one hand thereby the digestive system can fully focus on the metabolism of alcohol, on the other hand healthy foods such as vegetables and fruits can help to recover the nutrients and minerals lost during the consumption of alcohol.

Some sources believe that certain foods or beverages can ease the symptoms of hangover. However, there is no consensus on the beneficial effects of a strong coffee or greasy meals on hangover. Some things work for one, and it won’t for another, but it’s alright, because every person is different. So, everyone is free to decide whether to believe in these methods, on their own experiences.

In conclusion the best thing to avoid hangover is moderate alcohol consumption. Alcohol can be fun in a temperate quantity, but in an exaggerated way it can have negative consequences. It is important during responsible alcohol consumption to pay attention to the body’s individual limits and the overall health. The effects of alcohol are different for everyone, and it’s a must to consider the fact that the human body needs time to metabolize and eliminates alcohol.

During a long night spent with friends and beverages it is recommended to also drink water or soft drinks to stay hydrated. Also recommended to escort the alcohol with nutritious foods to slow down the absorption of the alcohol and relieve the hangover.
